In the 1970s, the Concorde transformed commercial aviation, reaching speeds over Mach 2 and cutting transatlantic flight times to under four hours. However, due to sonic booms, environmental concerns, and high operational costs, the aircraft was retired in 2003.
Now, supersonic travel is making a comeback. Boom Technology, a U.S.-based company, is developing a next-generation aircraft called Overture, aiming to bring back ultra-fast air travel—without the issues that grounded the Concorde.
Overture: The Next Evolution in Supersonic Flight
Boom Overture is designed to cruise at Mach 1.7, significantly reducing flight times. A London-to-New York flight will take less than 3.5 hours, making long-haul travel more efficient than ever. More importantly, Boom is working to make these flights as affordable as a business-class ticket, bringing supersonic travel to a wider audience.
Sustainability is also at the core of Overture’s design. The aircraft will use innovative technology to convert atmospheric CO₂ into aviation fuel, aiming to achieve near net-zero emissions. Speaking at the Paris Air Show 2019, Boom CEO Blake Scholl stated, “Our goal is to complete the testing phase and move to assembly. We expect the first test flight in 2020.”

Beyond speed, Boom Overture promises a premium onboard experience. Large windows will offer breathtaking views from 11 miles above the Earth, allowing passengers to see the planet’s curvature and the vastness of the sky.
Scholl believes that making supersonic travel more accessible can bring people and cultures closer together, stating, “Since the introduction of passenger jets, the world has become more connected. While air travel alone may not be the reason for global stability, it has certainly played a role in fostering closer relationships between nations and individuals.”
