Orange County officials are finalizing plans to enhance general aviation facilities at John Wayne Airport, with improvements aimed at accommodating hobby planes, corporate jets, and other private aircraft while maintaining a cap on the number of turbojets allowed to be based there.
Community concerns over potential noise and environmental impact prompted county supervisors to revisit the original expansion proposal. A revised plan, which is still under discussion, will focus on upgrading hangar space and improving services for smaller aircraft like Cessnas and Pipers. However, there will be no increase in leases for full-service operators, no new general aviation terminal, and the number of turbojets stationed at the airport will remain at 65.
Newport Beach Mayor Diane Dixon expressed confidence in the updated plan, stating, “We want this. We’re comfortable with this…”
Flight Restrictions and Private Jets
While commercial airlines at John Wayne Airport operate under a 1985 legal agreement that enforces overnight curfews and passenger limits, most private aviation falls outside these restrictions, with only noise regulations applying.
Although the airport cannot legally prevent private jets from landing, local residents hope that limiting available parking and leases for private aircraft will naturally reduce air traffic in and out of the facility.
